LMS Access

LMS Access

The idea behind the development of the learning management system (LMS) is to provide remote access to the material that is required for learning. Th system that I have been teaching for the last 5 years do prefer the LMS over handout or PDF files. For example, my former student that is visually imparied used the LMS much easier than the book. She toldme that it was easier for her to use the screen reader when she did not have to try look all over the place for the information. Another example, my physically impaired student from an auto accident could not  participate the same lab activities because of thelong standing, so she acted as the recorder for the lab. To get the help your student's need to successed is always a balance between money, expert help, and time of the instructor. A good hint for a teacher working on access issues is to ask outside your working area.

End of the semester

The end of the semester is finally here. I have 13 meetings scheduled over these next two weeks. I had 5 already and 2 today. I can't get anything done. Issues such access control have very difficult, but I think it is over. The state rules according to the DIR agency say 10 minutes of inactivity, and you have log back into the computer. This is to prevent illegal access.

Assistive technology app was made by a friend. It is called Speech Pups LLC. The app is forthe iPad to help people who have speech and/or language difficulties www.speechpups.com

mobile learning

These principles for mobile learning provide a guide for future tech based learning.
The primary issues to me are access and a lack of content actually designed for mobile learning.

Second Life

Tox Town is a nice little town with tons of environmental health related problems everywhere you turn. It is great for a online visit if your area has the bandwidth. I deal with problems by using the code word Fire to instruct my student to teloport to an another area in secondlife.
Below is an overview on how I used this in a class in summer of 2010 to discuss medication and environmental health.

Pollution Prevent Plan for Medicine & Drugs in Public Water Supply & Wastewater

1. Educational Outreach to the public using sources such as the pharmacy, health departments, doctor offices, municipal water bills, and public service announcements (PSA).

2. Provide one website that shows the levels of medicine /drugs found in the public water supply. This should include how this was determined and by what governmental agency (EPA or TCEQ). Provide a link to another part of the website that explains the potential environmental impacts of medicine in the drinking water supply. The website must link to the major drug companies Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for each medication which explains the proper method of disposal.

3. A toll free 800 number for the public to call to find out what they should do with the medication waste.

4. Labeling on the medicine containers should have a website address above, and a warning label for the proper disposal of unused medication.

This four part multi-layer approached must be evaluated to determine the effectiveness of both public knowledge of the problem, and to determine if the concentrations found in the public water supply are changing as a result of this public education.
